The quality of a colonoscopy depends on how clean the colon is. A good preparation lets the doctor see small polyps; a poor one may mean repeating the study. This general guide does not replace the written instructions you will receive.
3 days before
- Avoid seeds, nuts, corn, raw vegetables and fruit with skin.
- Prefer white rice, pasta, chicken, fish, eggs and white bread.
- Tell the office about every medication you take, especially blood thinners, diabetes drugs and iron.
The day before
- Clear liquids only: water, broth, clear juices without pulp, tea, gelatin and sports drinks.
- Avoid anything red or purple, which can be mistaken for blood.
- Start the laxative solution at the time indicated.
Taking the prep
- Most preparations are taken in two doses: one the evening before and one a few hours before the study. The split dose cleans better.
- Chill the solution and drink it through a straw if the taste bothers you.
- Stay near a bathroom. Barrier cream helps prevent irritation.
- You are ready when what comes out is clear or light yellow liquid.
The day of the study
- Stop all liquids at the time you were told, usually a few hours before.
- Come with a companion: you cannot drive after sedation.
- Wear comfortable clothes and leave valuables at home.
Afterward
You will rest for a short while, receive your results in writing and be able to eat lightly. Gas and mild bloating are normal for a few hours. Call if you have severe pain, fever or heavy bleeding.
