Laparoscopic colon surgery in Tijuana: small incisions, a faster return
Laparoscopy lets the surgeon operate on the colon and rectum through incisions of about half an inch, guided by a high-definition camera. For most patients it means less pain and a shorter hospital stay than open surgery.

Laparoscopic Colon and Rectal Surgery
Instead of one long incision, the surgeon works through several small ports with long instruments and a camera that magnifies the anatomy on a screen. The diseased segment is removed and the two healthy ends are joined.
Not every case can be done by laparoscopy: previous surgeries, very large tumors or emergencies sometimes require an open approach. The approach is chosen for your safety, and it is explained before the operation.
When is it recommended?
- Complicated or recurrent diverticulitis
- Colon and rectal cancer
- Large polyps that cannot be removed by colonoscopy
- Rectal prolapse
- Crohn’s disease and colostomy reversal
The diagnosis is confirmed at your evaluation.
How the procedure goes
Planning
Colonoscopy, CT and lab tests define the segment to be removed. Your heart and lung risk is assessed.
Preparation
Bowel preparation and preventive antibiotics as indicated, plus instructions on food and medication.
Surgery
General anesthesia. Removal of the segment through small ports and reconnection of the bowel.
Enhanced recovery
Walking and drinking fluids early, with pain control that avoids heavy opioids whenever possible.
Recovery and aftercare
The hospital stay is usually a few days. At home, walking daily, progressing the diet as indicated and avoiding heavy lifting for several weeks are the main rules. The removed tissue is always sent to pathology and the result is reviewed with you.
What people ask most
Will I need a colostomy?
Most planned colon operations do not require one. In some rectal surgeries or emergencies a temporary stoma protects the healing bowel and is reversed later. It is discussed beforehand.
How long is the hospital stay?
Typically a few days for planned laparoscopic colon surgery, depending on your recovery and the procedure.
Is laparoscopy as effective as open surgery for cancer?
In experienced hands and well-selected cases, laparoscopic surgery follows the same oncologic principles as open surgery, with the benefits of smaller incisions.
